Material Matters: a conference

Material Matters, tenth annual conference of the Atlantic Medieval Association, will take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 22 – 23, 2017. Click here for the conference schedule, and here for registration.

Exhibit: Centuries of Silence: the Discovery of the Salzinnes Antiphonal

The conference coincides with an important exhibition featured this year at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia: Centuries of Silence: the Discovery of the Salzinnes Antiphonal. Material Matters is using the exhibit as a point of departure for considering the various interdisciplinary methodologies that are involved in the study of medieval manuscripts, and includes both a tour of the exhibit at the Art Gallery and a concert of music from the Salzinnes Antiphonal.

Keynote address: Deborah McGrady, University of Virginia

The keynote address by Prof. McGrady, “Patronage avant la lettre: Literary Exchange at the Late-Medieval French Royal Court,” will investigate ideas of patronage during the reign of the third Valois king, Charles V (1364-1380).

Concert: Salzinnes Saints, performed by Psallentes Ensemble

Highly-acclaimed Belgian ensemble Psallentes, directed by Hendrik Vanden Abeele, will perform music from the Salzinnes Antiphonal, on Saturday, September 23 at 8 p.m. at Saint Mary’s Basilica in Halifax. The concert is co-sponsored by the Cecilia Concert Series and the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University.

We wish to acknowledge a number of sponsors and collaborators including the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Cecilia Concert Series, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
